Aspiring and New search engine optimization Execs: Three Suggestions for Success

Today’s question about SEO comes from Moses from Nairobi who asks:

What advice can you give to those looking to join the SEO profession, from the best courses for beginners to advanced levels?

What a great question!

First of all, I want to say that starting an SEO career is exciting. It’s a job that is fast and constantly evolving.

While taking classes is a good idea to get started, there is a lot more you can do to learn the ropes.

Don’t worry, I’m still answering the question about courses but I also offer some additional tips.

1. Complete SEO courses and related certifications

There are many free SEO courses out there that will give you a foundation of knowledge. Below are a handful to consider:

  • Search engine journal SEO guides: The Search Engine Journal has two guides designed specifically for beginners that contain information from industry experts. If you haven’t already, get hold of both ebooks SEO For Beginners: An Introduction to SEO Basics and a Complete Guide to SEO: What You Need to Know.
  • HubSpot SEO Certification Course: This is free and includes 6 lessons and 23 videos. It covers a lot of the basics like on-page optimization, keyword research, link building, and reporting.
  • Semrush Academy – Basic SEO Course with Greg Gifford: This is a free course offered by Semrush Academy and taught by Greg Gifford. It contains 8 modules that contain videos, readings and quizzes.
  • Individual qualification for Google Analytics: As an SEO, you spend a lot of time in Google Analytics and you need to be able to use it efficiently. Take the Google Analytics Beginners and Advanced Google Analytics courses to get certified. You can then take the test for the individual qualification of Google Analytics. It is worth it!

2. Create a website that you can use as an exercise

When you feel you have a good understanding of SEO practices, give your new knowledge a try.

When I wanted to get more experience with SEO, I built my own website so I could test the things I was learning.

Well, it wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing website, but it gave me hands-on experience understanding the basic and technical aspects of SEO. It also allowed me to test different techniques and was a great learning tool.

I recommend using WordPress as your CMS and for simplicity, find an existing theme that you can implement.

Then apply your newly acquired SEO knowledge. This is a great way to get familiar with HTML, optimization, and technical SEO.

If you’re wondering what the website should be about, consider blogging on a topic you’re already interested in.

3. Watch webinars and listen to podcasts

What I love about the SEO community is everyone’s willingness to share their knowledge and expertise.

There is no shortage of webinars and podcasts on various SEO topics. Although I’ve been in search engine optimization for a long time, I still tune in to learn from other experts in the field. Below is just an example:
