This week the search giant released an updated version of its How Search Works website that includes a series of insights and links to provide more information on its ever-evolving ranking algorithms that could help you better understand what you are looking for should be doing to align with its systems.
The mini-site covers all aspects of the Google search process, and while it is aimed at general readers, not SEO professionals specifically, it does help in giving more insight into Google’s ranking processes and what the Searching for web content.
Google provides basic overviews of each ranking element including, for example, why it uses automated keyword matching:
“We have never seen fifteen percent of searches every day. So we use automated systems to give you the most relevant and reliable information we can find. Systems take into account many factors, including the words in your query, the content of the pages, the Expertise of the sources as well as your language and your location. “
The website also provides basic guidance on how to use keywords and how their algorithms rank keyword match relevance based on each query:
“For example, if these keywords appear on the page or in the headings or in the body of web pages, the information may be more relevant.”
It also describes the basics of backlinks and how Google considers the value of links in ranking:
“One of several factors we use to determine this is understanding whether there are other prominent websites linking or referring to the content. This has often proven to be a good sign that the information is very trustworthy.”
It also includes notes on Google’s more recent search updates, including the Core Web Vitals change introduced in May.
As mentioned, the main information is pretty superficial, it doesn’t go into the more technical aspects of SEO optimization. But it does offer some good insight into the key elements of search ranking and what to consider in your approach to SEO.
But as anyone who’s ever tried to keep up with what’s going on on SEO knows, this information can change quickly. In fact, Google finds that it’s over 4,500 search “improvements” in 2020 alone.
